Document requirements depend on nationality, residence, previous marital status and the country issuing each document. Requirements and validity periods can change.
We therefore confirm the current requirements with the competent authority before documents are obtained or sent.
1. Initial assessment
We begin by reviewing your circumstances and identifying the categories of documents that may apply to you.
Typical document categories may include:
• identity and travel documents
• evidence of civil or marital status
• birth records where requested
• documents relating to a previous marriage or estate
• translations, apostilles or legalisation where applicable
Document format
The competent authority decides whether originals, certified copies, translations or legalisation are required. We confirm the applicable format before you obtain or send documents.
Certification and translations
Certification rules vary by document and issuing country. Foreign-language documents may need an authorised translation.
Current requirements
Validity periods and evidentiary requirements can change. We check the current position with the relevant authority for each matter.
Previous marriages
If either person has previously been married or widowed, additional evidence may be required. We identify the relevant documents after reviewing the circumstances.
2. Tailored checklist and secure transfer
After the initial assessment, we provide a tailored checklist and agree a secure method for transferring documents.
Please do not email passports, national identification numbers or other sensitive documents until a secure transfer method has been agreed.
3. Review and liaison
We review the documents received, flag any apparent gaps and, where instructed, assist with submission and communication with the relevant Icelandic authority.
This page provides general information only. The competent authority makes the final decision on whether documents and formal requirements are accepted in each case.
