Wedding Paperwork

Here you will find helpful information and answers to common questions about the steps required before getting married in Iceland. We will guide you through the entire process, making sure everything is handled correctly and answering any questions or concerns along the way.

There’s no need to worry – although it may seem complicated at first, the process is usually much simpler than it appears.

Step 1 – Gather the Required Documents.

Before anything else,  you will need to collect the following documents:

Marriage Notification Form (link)

  •
  • Must be carefully completed
  • Signed by both partners
  • Signed by two witnesses (18+ yo)

     Please note:

  • The ceremony time does not need to be exact
  • Page two of the form does not need to be completed

Certified Copy of Birth certificates

You must provide a certified true copy, confirmed with notarisation (notarius publicus).
(Notarised copies from lawyers are not accepted)

Each copy must include (on the same page):

  • The statement: “This is a true and certified copy of the original”
  • Official governmental stamp
  • Signature of issuing authority

     Alternative: Apostille certification is accepted

Certificate of marital status

     Each partner must provide:

  • An original certificate of marital status from the relevant authority (source of truth) including a search confirming no marriage from age 18 (or legal marital age)

If this document is not available:

  • An original certificate of no records of marriage.

     Important:

  • Must be issued within 12 weeks before the wedding date
  • Personal declarations are not accepted under Icelandic law
  • Must be signed and stamped by the issuing authority
  • If the certificate is not signed and stamped, you must have the document Apostille Certified.

If previously married:

     Divorced

  • Divorce decree
  • Proof that financial settlement (assets/liabilities) is completed
  • Copies are sufficient

     Widowed

  • Proof that the estate of the deceased spouse has been finalised
  • Copies are sufficient

Step two – Scan and send for review

  Once all documents are ready:

  • Scan all documents clearly
  • Send them to us via email

  We will:

  • Review everything carefully
  • Ensure all documents meet the District Commissioners office requirements
  • Confirm when everything is ready

Step three – Send the documents

  After receiving our approval:

  • Send documents using tracked courier service (DHL, FedEx, UPS, or similar)

From this point we handle all paperwork on your behalf including submission and required certifications.

The stamp from the sheriffs office is called “certificate of examination” and is a stamp on the application form that you filled out in step one.   This certificate of examination is necessary to be able to get married in Iceland, in short-spoken words, it’s your permission to get married. The certificate of examination is valid for 30 days and we will send it to your officiant.
